Rationale 1: This is the first year of the Health Science Academy. The academy was made possible through support from Gundersen Lutheran Hospital, University of Wisconsin La Crosse, Viterbo University, Western Technical College and La Crosse School district. I work directly with my Career and Technical supervisor from the School District of La Crosse, the Physiology and Anatomy teacher from Logan High School, the English teacher from Central High School, the Human Resource director of Gundersen Lutheran and the supervisor of the Health Science Consortium. All of this collaboration is to support student interest in careers in Health Science.

KSD

Knowledge 10.K.1 The teacher understands schools as organizations within the larger community context and understands the operations of the relevant aspects of the system(s) within which s/he works.

Students in the Health Academy become more familiar with the organization of hospitals and school systems in their community. They begin to understand the operations of the system and their role in each through a textbook novel we read and discuss in class throughout the year. I also understand that in order for future jobs to be filled, sometimes schools and communities work together or create such great learning opportunities such as our Health Academy.

Skills 10.S.3 The teacher can identify and use community resources to foster student learning. In this academy, we identify many community resources that foster student learning.

Guest speakers, field trips, labs and training have been identified and are incorporated every other week in this first year of the Academy. Students tour the hospital departments, have professional mentors in their career field of interest, get CPR training and Certified Nursing Assistant training, host guest speakers all focused on fostering the students’ learning in the health sciences.

Disposition 10.D.5 The teacher is willing to work with other professionals to improve the overall learning environment for students.

At this time in the new Health Academy, I work very closely with the Human Resources department of the hospital to advocate for the tours of my students’ interest. In learning the background of working with people in a hospital setting, we ask many questions pertaining to ethics, departments, hierarchy and the such to the professionals in the field. Hearing directly from these individuals helps the students think more critically about the lesson/topic at hand.
